Specialty grades of UHMW and marine board are an excellent choice for dock fender facings as they outlast other materials like wood, rubber, urethane, or high-density polyethylene. Specifically, Tivar® DockGuard is ideal for marine fender systems as vessels can glide easily along its surface without marring hulls. Additionally, UHMW is impervious to marine bore worms, sheds mussels and barnacles, and can outwear hardened steel while cutting hourglass wear on pilings. It can also withstand salt, fuel, and chemical spills. Other materials such as marine board, King Starboard HDPE, and King Hy-Pact plastics, especially anti-slip grades, are commonly used for gangways and walkways, machined rollers for dock fenders, and floating docks.

HDPE is also resistant to UV light and does not absorb water, which makes it an ideal choice for marine environments. Additionally, HDPE is easy to clean and maintain and resistant to corrosion and aquatic organisms.
Acetal is a suitable material for dock wheels on floating docks due to its high flexural strength and modulus, which makes it resistant to deformation and wear from heavy loads. Acetal also has near-zero water absorption, making it ideal for use in marine environments where exposure to water is common. Lastly, acetal is a cost-effective alternative to other materials with rusting or premature wear issues.
