Polypropylene Plastic Overview
What is polypropylene?

Polypropylene (PP) is a thermoplastic known for its strength and durability, excellent chemical and heat resistance, and cost-effectiveness. Polypropylene is used in a wide range of applications, such as packaging, consumer products, automotive components, and medical devices. The benefits of polypropylene include its high strength-to-weight ratio, durability, and low cost. It is also non-toxic, recyclable, and resistant to corrosion and many chemicals.

Homopolymer polypropylene grades are designed for applications that require rigidity and stress resistance, while carbon-reinforced homopolymer grades offer improved strength and stiffness. Copolymer grades are more flexible, which makes them suitable for applications that require formability. Polypropylene can be easily welded with hot air tools and fabricated into water and chemical tanks. FDA-compliant grades are used for body jackets, upper and lower extremity orthoses, AFOs, and prosthetic sockets.

Customers Also Asked:
Is polypropylene a good plastic?

Polypropylene is a durable lightweight plastic with a good balance of thermal, electrical, and chemical properties that is generally considered to be safe for human contact. Polypropyelene's diverse strengths make it desirable in a variety of applications such as orthopedic appliances, tanks, irrigation, animal feeders, and food containers.

Is polypropylene a cheap plastic?

Polypropylene is a widely used and relatively cheap high strength thermoplastic. It is typically seen in chemical and water tanks and has good aesthetic qualities.

What are the disadvantages of polypropylene?

Polypropylene has several disadvantages. A high thermal expansion coefficient limits its use in high temperature applications and it is extremely flammable. Polypropylene will degrade when exposed to UV rays and is hard to paint due to poor bonding properties.

Which is better: plastic or polypropylene?

Polypropylene is a type of plastic that is created by the polymerization of propylene gas. Polypropylene is used in a variety of applications due to its excellent mechanical properties and its resistance to fatigue and abrasion. From automotive components to laboratory equipment, polypropylene is favored in a diverse array of industries.
