Metal Fabrication Shop Materials

Metal Fabrication Shop Materials Overview
What plastics are used in metal fabrication?

In metal fabrication shops, plastics are used for a variety of purposes, including protection, insulation, and fabrication.

Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene (ABS): ABS is a thermoplastic with good impact resistance and mechanical strength used for custom jigs, fixtures, or templates for accurate alignment and positioning during the various fabrication steps.

High-Density Polyethylene (HDPE): HDPE is a durable plastic with excellent chemical resistance and impact strength and is a great fit for the creation of sturdy workbenches, storage containers, or material handling equipment.

Polyethylene (PE): PE is a versatile plastic used as protective covering for finished products in storage or or during shipping.

Polycarbonate (PC): PC is a transparent and impact-resistant plastic used in metal fabrication shops to cover or shield machinery and equipment. Its transparency allows visbility of the machinery for inspection while providing a protective barrier.

Polypropylene (PP): PP is a widely used plastic known for its excellent chemical resistance and durability. Like PE, PP sheets can be used for storing and transporting metal components, but may also act as separators between stacked sheet metal pieces.

Polyvinyl Chloride (PVC): PVC sees use as an insulating material for electrical wiring and cables in sheet metal shop environments. PVC sheets can also be utilized for signage, labels, or as protective covers.

Materials for metal fabrication applications fall under NAICS code #332322.
