Shaker Springs for Food Processing Equipment

Shaker Springs Overview
Why use NorPLY™ for shaker springs?

NorPLY™ 1002 is designed to optimize performance under load and has many beneficial properties for shaker springs in shaker tables:

  • Excellent fatigue life: NorPLY™'s unique parallel filament composition minimizes the filament stress abrasion that shortens the lifespan of traditional reinforced plastics. Its excellent fatigue life allows it to outlast similar composite materials for fatigue-intensive applications like shaker springs and endure many load cycles without failing.
  • High strain capability: NorPLY™ 1002's unidirectional fiber orientation is suited for use in demanding, high strain applications.
  • Weight reduction: NorPLY™ can provide anywhere from 10% to 60% component weight reduction compared to steel.
  • High strength-to-weight: NorPLY™'s high strength-to-weight ratio is crucial for applications where both weight reduction and structural integrity are important.
  • Energy storage: NorPLY™ offers both a lower modulus and density than traditional spring steel. These properties allow for greater specific strain capacity when placed under mechanical load.
  • Chemical- and corrosion-resistant: NorPLY™'s resistance to harsh chemicals and environments increases its performance life.
  • Noise dampening: NorPLY™ flat shaker springs operate at a lower noise level than steel springs.

Plastic products for shaker tables fall under NAICS codes #111335, 111336, 111998, 115113, 115114, 333111, 423828, and 423830.

What is Cyply material?

Cyply® is a fatigue-resistant glass epoxy composite material that now goes by the brand name NorPLY™ 1002. It is a cured glass epoxy composite sheet with a unique non-woven parallel filament structure that minimizes the filament stress that shortens fatigue life in other reinforced plastics. NorPLY™ 1002 may be used for the same applications as Cyply®, including flat shaker springs, insulation spacers, struts, shocks, and flexible/dynamic couplings.

What are detwigger screens?

Detwigger screens are specialized components used in shaker tables for the separation of debris from materials such as nuts or produce. Detwigger screens are strategically placed on the vibrating deck of shaker tables, and as materials like nuts or produce are fed onto the table, the vibrating motion causes the debris to separate from the desired product. Detwigger screens made from Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW-PE) are more abrasion-resistant than similar materials and have a non-stick surface that promotes smooth material flow while maintaining effectiveness and durability over a prolonged period of time.

NorPLY™ 1002 for Shaker Springs - Quick Facts

Reliable fatigue-resistant materials like NorPLY™ and Ultra High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMW-PE) are popular material choices for the nut processing and food processing industries. NorPLY™, formerly known as ScotchPLY or CyPly, is a glass-epoxy composite material used for shaker springs in shaker tables. It offers unique advantages in shaker spring construction, providing strength, stiffness, and energy storing properties crucial for increased performance and longevity. Detwigger screens are made from UHMW-PE and rely on its exceptional strength, abrasion resistance, non-stick properties, and low friction characteristics to facilitate smooth and efficient material separation. Custom machined parts from Interstate Advanced Materials are made to fit your exact specifications by our skilled machinists using precision machining processes like CNC routing and are used as components in sorting equipment, conveyors, packaging equipment, and processing equipment. NorPLY™, UHMW-PE, and custom machined parts all contribute to the efficient and reliable operation of shaker tables and other vibratory equipment in the nut and food processing industries.

Shaker Springs in Shaker Tables

Shaker tables require stiff fatigue-resistant materials like NorPLY™ 1002 for flat shaker springs to keep the table shaking or vibrating in a stable and consistent manner. Featuring a unique non-woven parallel filament composition, NorPLY™ is designed to outlast other composite materials in fatigue-intensive applications and is a superior replacement to steel. Made from continuous E-glass filaments mixed with an epoxy resin, NorPLY™ has greater energy storage than 1060 steel, allowing it to absorb and dampen the vibrations generated by the shaker table's motor or actuator. NorPLY™ resists chemicals and corrosion and cannot rust, ensuring that it will outlast steel over time. It has a high strength-to-weight ratio and when used as a replacement for steel parts, NorPLY™'s light weight allows for anywhere between 10% to 60% component weight reduction, removing excess weight that could impact table performance. Flat shaker springs made from NorPLY™ are more efficient and longer-lasting than steel or similar composite materials, requiring fewer replacements and ensuring minimal downtime for shaker tables.

NorPLY™ from Interstate Advanced Materials is offered in spring ply, unidirectional orientation.

Natural UHMW Sheet

Ultra-High Molecular Weight Polyethylene (UHMWPE) is well-suited for use as detwigger screens for shaker tables. Its high strength and light weight ensure durability in the face of the constant mechanical stresses and impacts that can occur during the material separation process. UHMW's exceptional resistance to abrasion allows it to endure the wear and tear inflicted by particles and debris on the shaker table and increase its service life compared to alternatives like steel or rubber. Its impressively low coefficient of friction and non-stick properties enable smooth material flow across its surface without clogging, jamming, or buildup, which helps optimize the efficiency of the separation process.
